About the Gala Concert on the occasion of the National Day of Romania

On the 5th of December 2013, the National Day of Romania has been celebrated in London with an extraordinary recital by the soprano Anita Hartig, the glamorous protagonist of scenes of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The recital included masterpieces by George Enescu, Richard Strauss, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Alfredo Catalani, Giaccomo Puccini and Charles Gounod.

The event has represented the highlight among all recitals held during 2013 as part of “The Enescu Concerts Season” and was organized, as usual, during the month of December, by the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Romanian Embassy in London.

The evening started with a speech of the Ambassador of Romania in London, Dr Ion Jinga, who has honoured Felicia Buruiana, Iolanda Costide and Ramona Mitrica through a short special ceremony. In recognition of their activity in promoting the Romanian culture in the United Kingdom and their dedication to the Romanian community they were offered the Ambassador Diploma. Also, Mister Dorian Branea, the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London has addressed a few words to the public.

Anita Hartig is one of the most successful Romanian artists, and truly a rising star of international opera, currently performing on all major lyric scenes around the world. After graduating the Cluj Music academy she furthered her studies with legendary Ileana Cotrubas. Since 2009 she has been a member of the Vienna State Opera. Anita Hartig had her debut with the royal Opera House Covent Garden this spring and impressed the audience and critics alike as Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème/ The Telegraph described her as ‚being the latest in a long line of fine Romanian lyric sopranos as Zeani, Cotrubas, Vaduva or Gheorghiu to enjoy special success’.

Anita Hartig was accompanied by the Swedish pianist, conductor and professor Mats Knutsson, who has studied in the Vienna and Munich Music Academies. He taught at opera schools in Gothenburg and Copenhagen and coached at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen 2000-2009 and at the Vienna State Opera since 2009.
